Rosneft Employees Cleaned 210,000 m2 of Coastal Areas for Volga Day

22 May 2023

Employees of Rosneft enterprises in the Samara Region held an environmental action on Volga Day to clean the coastal areas – they cleaned 210 thousand m2 of the banks of Russia’s main river, collected and removed about 10 tonnes of waste carried by the current.

More than 200 employees of Rosneft’s Samara Group refineries – Novokuibyshevsk Refinery, Kuibyshev Refinery, Syzran Refinery, Novokuibyshev Petrochemical Company, Novokuibyshevsk Oils and Additives Plant, as well as Samaraneftegaz, SamaraNIPIneft and the Middle Volga Refining Research Institute – participated in the event. This year, workers have not only improved the banks of the Volga, but also the banks of the Sok and Tatjanka rivers.

Environmental volunteering is an integral part of the ongoing environment-oriented initiatives of Rosneft’s subsidiaries. The Samara group of enterprises has been running volunteer campaigns for several years to collect plastic lids, waste paper and batteries and other environmental initiatives.

Water conservation is an important part of the Company’s environmental work. Rosneft’s enterprises are implementing measures to improve the efficiency of wastewater treatment and develop a water recycling system.

The Kuibyshev refinery has reduced its use of Volga water by 20% over the past six years. At the same time, the volume of waste water fell by almost 10%. The share of recycled water in the enterprise’s water supply has reached 91.5% thanks to the modernisation of the recycled water units. This has significantly reduced energy consumption as well as the environmental impact

Samaraneftegaz has completely stopped drawing water to maintain reservoir pressure and does not discharge any wastewater into water bodies.

At the Novokuibyshevsk Petrochemical Company, the use of recycled water has been increased to almost 96%, while the use of river water has been reduced by 10.6%.

Modernisation of the biological and physico-chemical waste water treatment facilities at the Syzran refinery continues. The recycled water usage rate for 2022 is 94.5%.

Rosneft’s plants are making a significant contribution to reducing the environmental impact of Volga vessels. The Syzran refinery has significantly increased production of the highly environmentally friendly marine fuel RMLS 40 in recent years. The Novokuibyshevsk refinery has increased production of environmentally friendly TMS type A fuel for river and sea vessels. Oil products quality is fully compliant with the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL).

Efforts to replenish aquatic bioresources to conserve biodiversity and increase the fish population in the Volga Basin are ongoing. In 2022, the Samara Region enterprises released about 370 thousand fry of valuable fish species into the Volga: sterlets, carps and silver carps. And 1.7 million fish fry in the last three years.

As part of a socio-economic partnership, Samaraneftegaz is helping communities to address issues related to the restoration and development of springs. Such projects have been implemented in nine districts of the region.
