RN-Uvatneftegaz Supports Environmental Research of Tyumen Scientists

19 May 2023

RN-Uvatneftegaz (part of Rosneft's oil and gas production complex) has allocated grants for environmental projects of practical importance to the Tyumen region. The projects are aimed at studying the region's rare animal and bird species as well as educational activities.

Responsible attitude towards the environment is an integral part of the Rosneft's corporate culture and one of the key principles of its business.

As part of the RN-Uvatneftegaz grant programme, the V.I. Shpilman Research and Analytical Centre for Rational Use of Subsoil will monitor large lakes in the Tyumen region. Scientists will use satellite imagery to create a unified database of lake ecosystems and monitor possible changes. The data obtained will make it possible to identify lakes in need of special protection and restoration measures.

This year, with the support of RN-Uvatneftegaz, specialists from the Tyumen State University will continue to study the ornithological fauna and the state of populations of rare bird species listed in the Red Books of Russia and the Tyumen region. These include white-tailed sea eagle, Eurasian curlew, black-throated loon, mute swan, osprey and others.

Scientists will map and monitor the nests of rare bird species. As a result of the study, ornithologists will develop a set of measures to increase the population of rare bird species.

In 2021, a study of Lake Solyonoye was carried out with the support of Rosneft. The Company's subsidiaries – Tyumenneftegaz, RN-Uvatneftegaz and TPRC – have drawn public attention to the need to preserve the lake, whose water and sludge have unique properties. Its hydrochemical composition is comparable to that of the water and mud of the Dead Sea. The lake is visited by thousands of tourists every year, also for balneotherapy. Over the past five years, special environmental projects carried out by Company's Tyumen enterprises have cleaned the shores of such large lakes in the region as Andreevskoye, Krugloye and Pesyanoye.

In 2022, RN-Uvatneftegaz launched a programme to study and protect the forest reindeer population in the Uvat district of the Tyumen region. The enterprise also supported the publication of the first-ever book on the region's protected areas and the red-listed birds and animals that inhabit them.
